The summer Youth Sailing Classes have been completed for 2009 at CSC. Gavin Rudolph, Paul Denison, and Nicole Grant returned
as coaches this year. All 3 hold US Sailing Level 2 Certification.
There were 3 class sessions: June 8 – June 19, June 22 – July 3, and July 20 – July31.
Recommended ages for the classes are 8 to 18; those younger than 8 often are not ready. Average class age is typically 10 to 14 years. The classes were split into groups based on sailing ability. Classes ran from 9am-2pm daily.
New this year was a Teen Camp that ran from
June 8 - 19. This class was open to teens aged
13-18 and included only Lasers and 420s.
2009 TSA Wrapup
Four CSC sailors sailed at least 7 of the 14 TSA regattas to qualify for participation awards. Masie Comen sailed over 7 regattas, but split between the Laser 4.7 and 420 so she received a participation award but was not scored in any fleet. However, Masie did win the TSA Female Scholarship Award, a $500 scholarship awarded annually based on TSA participation and academic excellence.

Also sailing in their first 420 regatta were Collin White and John Grover who finished 6th. Masie Comen skippered a Club 420 (spinnaker and trapeze) with Lindsey Hopper from RCYC and finished 4th.
On the Laser 4.7 line Sam Strong finished 8th and Clinton Trammell finished 10th.

Texas Youth Race Week
11 members of the CSC Junior Race Team competed at Texas Youth Race Week (TYRW) on Galveston Bay just outside of Houston from July 11th to 16th.
In the Opti Green (novice fleet) out of 43 registered boats competing in one or more of the regattas Rachel Mittman finished 3rd, 14th, and 18th, with an overall finish of 8th. Jamie Weston also competed in the Opti Green Fleet with finishes of 17th, 20th, and 22nd, finishing 18th overall. Tyler Killion recently moved up to the Red fleet where he competed against 77 other Red, White, or Blue experienced sailors. He showed vast improvement as the week went on and he learned to deal with the conditions. Tyler’s finishes were 70th, 66th, and 54th, with an overall finish of 66th. His finishes included a 25th on the final day of racing.
In Laser 4.7 Masie Comen, Clinton Trammell and Sam Strong competed against 20 other sailors. Masie finished 8th in the first regatta. She aggravated an old injury, righting her boat, after she flipped with only one leg left in the last race of the 2nd regatta. She was in 2nd place of the race until she had to retire. She still finished 10th in the second regatta and 13th overall. Clinton was unable to sail in the first regatta and had finishes of 15th and 7th and 15th overall. Sam Strong sailing in his first regattas had finishes of 18th and 17th and did not compete at the last venue, his overall finish was 19th.
CSC had 3 boats competing in the Club 420 fleet (sailed with spinnaker and trapeze). Collin Weston and crew Caitlin Carr had finishes of 3rd, 3rd, and 2nd, with an overall finish of 3rd. Aaron Comen crewed for Ben Lipari of Grapevine Sailing Club in their first Club 420 regatta and had straight finishes of 4th across the board, they just missed 3rd by 1 point in the last regatta. Caroline Keehn and Hope Reim competed in their first 420 regatta finishing 5th at the first venue.

The "Rock-The-Rock” Regatta:
Texas Sailing Assoc. Youth Circuit Regatta
On March 31 - April 1, CSC will host a Texas Sailing Association Youth Circuit Regatta. The regatta will be attended by junior sailors 19 years of age and under from throughout Texas. For less experienced sailors, the Optimist Green Fleet will sail separately from the more experienced sailors. If you have never sailed in a regatta, you should give it a try. Everyone has fun, and in the Green Fleet you sail with other, sailors your age who are just starting out. Try it once and we guarantee, you will be hooked!! When published the The Notice of Race can be downloaded from the Texas Sailing Association Web site.
2007 Metroplex Junior Series
This series is a fun way to have your child introduced to racing and continue their sailing interests. CSC, together with other local sailing clubs, have gotten together to pool junior sailing to create a larger group.... for more information click here.
CSC Youth Sailing Email List
To keep up-to-date on CSC junior activities, have your name added to the CSC Youth Parent email list by sending an email to ed@cscsailing.org with the subject line reading "Add me to the CSC Youth Parent email list."
Youth Sailing Discussion Forum
In addition to the email list, a Youth Sailing Forum has been added to the CSC website to keep you abreast of youth sailing activities at CSC and throughout Texas.
Use of Club-Owned Boats
Here are the rules for using the club-owned Optis and Lasers.
Volunteer Support
All youth sailing programs must have parental support to be successful.
For our program to thrive, we always need parents to volunteer for:
1. Rescue boat duty for Sunday afternoon sailing:
2. Help with maintaining the youth shed and equipment
3. Help with youth social and entertainment Activities.
4. Also, since CSCs youth program is focused on developing
youth racing sailors, we need parents who will support their child's
participation in local and statewide regattas. You do not need to
own your own boat, as CSC has club boats available for use in regattas.
For more information on how to volunteer contact Steve Comen
at 214-417-3864 or by e-mail
