FOR THE LOVE OF THE LAKE (FTLOTL)

FTLOTL had its annual Adopt-A-Shoreline (AAS) Appreciation Lunch on Friday, April 25, 2003 .  The 3-way tie for the AAS Group of the Year award went to Mariner Sails, Kayak Power, and Flotsam Flotilla.  Chris Dukeminier is the group leader for Mariner Sails and he is a member of the Flotsam Flotilla.  The two groups that received the AAS SuperHero award for revitalizing participation in the Second Saturday Spruce-up were the Corinthian Sailing Club and Caroline Gardens .  Susan Justus is the group leader for Caroline Gardens .  Another active AAS group is Virginia Cook Realty, and Mark Pinkston is their group leader.  As you can see, CSC members are active participants in the FTLOTL organization.

In the past, CSC has had a Volunteer Appreciation Night at the clubhouse for the FTLOTL members.  The gathering is to thank the many volunteers who participate in the Second Saturday Spruce-up and to give them the opportunity to see the lake from a different viewpoint; they are able to appreciate White Rock Lake on a sailboat rather than from the shoreline.  CSC is having the next Volunteer Appreciation Night on June 28, 2003 .  The FTLOTL volunteers bring food and drinks, and CSC members take them for sails on the lake.  If you are available to participate in the Volunteer Appreciation Night, please contact Lauri Block at 214/821-3933.

 Butterfly  Wrangle Regatta

The Wrangle Regatta for Butterflies and Lasers was held the weekend of May 3-4.  The regatta was sailed in conditions varying from shifty-light air to a steady 20 plus from the South with gusts approaching 30.  Of the sixteen Butterflies competing, Bruce Faust, once again, took top honors.  Among the six Laser/Laser Radial fleet, Chris Henkel won the tie-breaker over Doug Peckover to finish first.  Paul Denison took the award for Top Junior, finishing in a tie for fifth overall in the Butterfly fleet.  The award for Top Woman Butterfly Finisher went to Susan Justus.

The competition among the Butterfly fleet was tight going into the last day of the regatta.  With two races remaining on Sunday, there was a battle for first with Bruce and Lisle Eddy one point apart and a fight for third with Bob Biegler, Gary Eppink and Sandy Denison all within one point.  In Sunday's first race Sandy led all the way until hitting the last windward mark before the downwind leg to the finish, allowing Bruce to maneuver by him to finish first with Sandy in second and Lisle in third.  In the second race on Sunday Bruce and Sandy battled it out for first until Bruce capsized at the jibe mark allowing Sandy to scoot by and take first with Gery Osowiecki sailing well in the heavy air taking second, followed by Frank Richards in third.  When all the dust settled after the last race, Bruce's consistent finishes with three bullets and no other finishes worse than third (except for the DNF when he capsized in race six) gave him first place honors putting him three points ahead of Sandy, who made up for a slow start in the regatta by finishing with two firsts, a second, and a fourth in the last four races.  Sandy also got a little help from Lisle who retired from the sixth race with an injury, but who still took third place overall in the regatta with top four finishes in all five races in which he competed.

Congratulations also to Susan Justis who squeaked by Jackie Carver and Katherine Holt to come away with the award for Top Woman in the Butterfly fleet.  Before retiring with mechanical problems, Susan was consistently finishing among the leaders.

The Laser fleet was a face-off between Chris Henkel and Doug Peckover, with each trading firsts and seconds throughout the regatta.  At the end of the day both finished with identical scores of 9, with three firsts and three seconds each.  The winner was decided by the final tiebreaker with Chris beating Doug in the final sixth race.  At the awards ceremony Chris tried to decline acceptance of the first place trophy, professing that his victory was tainted since Doug had given him a head-start in the last race.  I think they settled it by agreeing to each keep the trophy for six months during the year.

Special recognition should also go to Top Junior Paul Denison.  Paul was competing in the regatta against adults, some of whom are among the best and most competitive Butterfly sailors in the country.  He was always in the thick of things throughout, consistently finishing up with the leaders.  The only thing holding him back was having enough ballast to keep the boat flat in heavy air; but he sure made up for it on those screaming reaches.  By next year, we all fear that after the start all we will see of Paul is the transom of his boat.

Finally, special thanks to the Flying Scot fleet, especially PRO Richard Wade, who set some great courses, which led to some great competition and a fun time by all.

The Butterfly fleet conducts regular Saturday races year-round with first gun scheduled for 10:30 a.m. during the warmer months and at noon during the winter season.  If you are interested in some great single-handed sailing, please consider joining us on the starting line.
